Hereward College - Services

DSA Access Centre

Hereward College is at the forefront of teaching and learning using assistive technologies.

The Hereward College ACCESS Centre is not-for-profit and provides assessments for UK students who are eligible for the Disabled Student Allowance (DSA). The DSA helps cover the costs of additional support required when attending university.

Our approach to assessment is centred on the individual and we use a holistic, multidisciplinary method developed over thirty years to ensure that students can fully participate in living, learning and work environments in order to achieve their goals.

All our DSA Assessments are currently being delivered over the phone or via video call. Please call 024 7642 6146 or email access@hereward.ac.uk to make an appointment or contact us via the online form.

Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. In exceptional circumstances home assessments may be conducted, please contact the centre for further details.

During your assessment at Hereward we will:
  • Aim to see you within 15 working days of you contacting us.
  • Work with you to identify hurdles and difficulties which may be a barrier to you making the most of your education, training and potential employment.
  • Demonstrate, evaluate and recommend a range of assistive technologies including software and equipment as well as hands-on support.
After your assessment:
  • We will liaise with funding bodies, equipment suppliers, higher education institutions and other parties in order to ensure your support needs are addressed fully.
  • You will receive a report within 10 working days of your assessment taking place. You may opt to see your report as either a final version or a draft copy before it is sent to Student Finance England.
The DSA will cost £650 which is covered by your funding body. This is an all inclusive price which includes the assessment, writing the report and sending to relevant agencies, and any reasonable query or request for the duration of the academic programme.

The cost of your assessment is covered by your funding body and is fully inclusive, which means one assessment fee will cover all work required for the duration of your course of study. This includes:
  • Additional needs with which a student presents.
  • Any activities undertaken by the assessor or centre to review the student’s DSA support, for the duration of the original course.
  • Liaison with funding bodies, equipment suppliers, HEIs or other stakeholders for the purpose of review of the student’s support needs.

More information on the assessment process and our centres can be found at our DSA portal www.hereward.ac.uk/dsa
